Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center advises dog owners to improve their visibility on short winter days with reflective clothing, LED lights and a headlamp or flashlight after dark. For the dog, there are two matching tools: a collar with reflective material, and a safety light that makes its own light. This guide explains the difference and compares five options on their published specs.

How We Researched This Guide

We read each product page for three things: what the maker says makes the product visible, how it attaches and fits, and what it costs on the maker’s US store. We then read Cornell’s winter safety guidance from Dr. Brian Collins, which lists reflective trim among the additional features some coats offer and calls reflective strips on booties “a helpful safety feature, especially if a coat isn’t worn at the same time.” In our reading, that points to the gap this guide covers: a dog that walks in the dark without a reflective coat.

The five products below are three reflective collars and two safety lights. The collars rely on reflective thread, stripes or details, as each maker describes them. The lights make their own light: Ruffwear’s Beacon runs on a rechargeable battery, and Rex Specs says its Safety Light is magnetic-powered.

1. Ruffwear Crag Collar

Suits: owners who want an everyday collar with reflective webbing.

Ruffwear describes the Crag as an everyday collar where “reflective thread is woven into the comfortable and durable webbing.” It uses side-release buckles for quick on and off, and an aluminum V-ring that, in Ruffwear’s words, “provides a secure leash attachment point.” There is a silicone tag silencer and a separate ID attachment point.

What the spec sheet says:

  • Webbing: polyester jacquard with reflective thread woven in
  • Side-release buckle and aluminum V-ring
  • Silicone tag silencer and separate ID attachment point
  • Neck size 11 to 14 in (0.75 in width), 14 to 20 in (1 in width), 20 to 26 in (1 in width)
  • Ruffwear’s sizing advice for a dog between two sizes: size up

Drawbacks on paper:

  • The price is not the same for every colorway on Ruffwear’s product page, so the color you pick changes what you pay.
  • Care is hand wash with mild detergent and air dry.

Pricing: varies by colorway on Ruffwear’s product page, so check current price for the color you want.

Who it suits: Ruffwear calls the webbing itself reflective (“reflective Tubelok™ webbing”), and Ruffwear’s Beacon page says all Ruffwear collars are compatible with the Beacon’s Quick Clip, so the Beacon, covered below, can go on the Crag.

2. Rex Specs Reflective Trailhead Collar

Suits: dogs whose neck size is 14 to 24 in, and owners who want a collar that matches the rest of the Trailhead system.

Rex Specs lists “reflective details for low-light conditions,” a “durable continuous loop leash attachment,” and a lightweight buckle and tri-glide hardware. Rex Specs says the collar integrates with the full Trailhead system.

What the spec sheet says:

  • Reflective details for low-light conditions
  • Continuous loop leash attachment
  • Lightweight buckle and tri-glide hardware
  • Sizes by neck measurement: size 2 fits 14 to 16.5 in, size 3 fits 16.5 to 19.5 in, size 4 fits 19.5 to 24 in
  • Sizing advice on the Trailhead page: between sizes, size up for a looser fit and down for a slightly tighter fit

Drawbacks on paper:

  • By the listed sizes, the size range starts at a 14 in neck, so a dog with a neck under 14 in falls below it.

Pricing: $21.99 on the Rex Specs product page on 12 October 2026.

Who it suits: Owners who already use, or plan to buy, other parts of the Trailhead system and want them to work together.

What the spec sheet says:

  • Woven-in reflective safety stripe
  • Single-ply nylon lined with black neoprene
  • Quick-release buckle
  • Anodized aluminum dee for the leash
  • Adjustable fit

Drawbacks on paper:

  • Rex Specs sells it in sizes 2, 3 and 4. The price follows that choice: $11.99 to $16.49 on the product page.

4. Ruffwear The Beacon Dog Safety Light

Suits: what Ruffwear calls “low-light conditions or inclement weather.”

Ruffwear calls the Beacon a safety light that is “visible from all directions with a bright, full-body glow.” It attaches with a Quick Clip that Ruffwear says is compatible with all Ruffwear collars and apparel light loops. The light modes are Slow Flash, Fast Flash and Always On.

What the spec sheet says:

  • Waterproof to a depth of one meter of water for half an hour, per Ruffwear
  • A rechargeable 280mAh LiPo battery, charged with the included standard micro USB cable; Ruffwear lists the charge time as approximately 1.5 hrs
  • Battery life: Ruffwear lists three colors, three modes and an operating time of up to 20 hrs for this battery
  • Polycarbonate body

Drawbacks on paper:

  • It charges over micro USB with a standard micro USB cable.
  • It has a rechargeable battery, so it has to be charged; Ruffwear lists the battery’s operating time as up to 20 hrs.

Pricing: $39.99 on Ruffwear’s product page on 12 October 2026.

Who it suits: Anyone who wants a light that can stay on: the Beacon’s spec sheet lists an Always On mode alongside Slow Flash and Fast Flash.

  • Waterproof
  • Motion-activated blinking
  • Magnetic-powered; Rex Specs says it never needs batteries
  • Attaches to the collar

Drawbacks on paper:

Reflective or Lit: How to Choose

Compare the prices in the table

Comparing the listed prices, the Switchback ($11.99 to $16.49) costs less than the Trailhead ($21.99). The Crag’s price varies by colorway. Comparing the listed prices of the two lights, the Rex Specs Safety Light ($15.99) costs less than the Beacon ($39.99). The Beacon lists three modes and up to 20 hrs of operating time.

You can combine them

The two types are not either-or. Ruffwear says all Ruffwear collars are compatible with the Beacon’s Quick Clip, and the Crag is a Ruffwear collar. Rex Specs says its Safety Light attaches to your pet’s collar.

Fit the collar first

Measure around your dog’s neck and compare with the sizing on the product page. For a dog between two sizes, Ruffwear advises sizing up. On the Trailhead page, Rex Specs says to size up for a looser fit or down for a slightly tighter fit.

Make yourself visible too

Cornell’s advice on winter visibility is for the person on the other end of the leash: wear reflective clothing or clothing with reflective features, use LED lights, and use a headlamp or flashlight after dark. The same guidance suggests avoiding walks when the ground is icy and when visibility is poor. For the rest of your trail kit, see our dog trail safety essentials.

FAQ: Reflective Dog Collars

Should I add a light to a reflective dog collar?

Cornell’s winter guidance for owners combines several measures: reflective clothing, LED lights, and a headlamp or flashlight after dark. In our reading, the same layered approach fits the dog, and both lights in this guide attach to a collar: Ruffwear says all Ruffwear collars are compatible with the Beacon’s Quick Clip, and Rex Specs says its Safety Light attaches to your pet’s collar.

What is the difference between a reflective collar and a light-up collar?

A reflective collar relies on reflective material, such as reflective thread or a reflective stripe. A light-up option makes its own light. In this guide, the Beacon from Ruffwear runs on a rechargeable battery, and the Rex Specs Safety Light is described by Rex Specs as magnetic-powered and never needing batteries.

Can I put a safety light on a reflective collar?

Yes, with the right pairing. Ruffwear says all Ruffwear collars and apparel light loops are compatible with the Beacon’s Quick Clip, and Rex Specs says its Safety Light attaches to your pet’s collar.

How should a reflective dog collar fit?

Measure around the neck and use the maker’s sizing. For a dog between two sizes, Ruffwear advises sizing up. On the Trailhead page, Rex Specs suggests sizing up for a looser fit or down for a slightly tighter fit.

Does Cornell recommend reflective gear for dogs?

Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center lists reflective trim among the additional features some winter coats offer and describes reflective strips on booties as a helpful safety feature, especially if a coat isn’t worn at the same time. It also advises owners to wear reflective clothing and use LED lights on short winter days.

Summing Up

Start with the collar, then decide on a light. On the spec sheets, the Ruffwear Crag has reflective webbing, the Trailhead collar from Rex Specs integrates with the full Trailhead system, and the Rex Specs Switchback carries a woven-in reflective stripe at $11.99 to $16.49. Add the Ruffwear Beacon if you want a light that can stay on, or the Rex Specs Safety Light, which Rex Specs says never needs batteries. See also our winter gear for dogs roundup.
